WWNY-TV reported on October 6, 2019, that three men were killed in a head-on collision between a U-Haul van and a pickup truck in Orleans County. According to state police, the U-Haul van crossed the center line of State Highway 63 in Shelby and struck the oncoming pickup.
According to WKBW-TV, both the U-Haul van and the pickup truck left the roadway and caught fire. All three men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pick-up was a 73-year-old Holley man and the U-Haul driver was an 80-year-old man while his passenger was 57 years of age. NewYorkUpstate reported that the New York Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit, Forensic Identification Unit, and Shelby Volunteer Fire Company assisted at the scene, and state police say the investigation is still ongoing.
Determining the actual cause of a head-on accident can be challenging. Some of the more common causes can include, but are not limited to:
- Reckless Driving
- Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)
- Distracted Driving
- Unsafe Roadways
- Driver Fatigue
- Medical Emergency
- Failure to Obey Traffic Signs or Signals
- Inclement Weather
- Improper Passing
- Wrong Way Driving
It is important to keep in mind that a negligent driver might not be the only liable party in these cases. For example, the company that rented out a U-Haul truck could also be accountable if they loaned the vehicle to a dangerous driver in certain cases.
It is also possible that some head-on collisions stem from defective vehicle design, parts, or maintenance. When an accidents are the result of defective design or parts, the manufacturer could be held liable for damages, and it is also possible that a maintenance company could also be held responsible if an accident stemmed from some kind of improper or inadequate repair job.
