Drunk drivers are the scourge of the roads, causing thousands of unnecessary deaths and disfigurements each year. No driver is ever completely safe from drunk drivers, as there is no neighborhood or time or day where drunk drivers are not on the road. Pedestrians are not always safe, as crossing the wrong road at the wrong time can get one killed. Bicyclists must be constantly vigilant against be sideswiped by a drunk driver. Now, it is clear that even accident investigators are not safe.
A devastating story out of Denver, Colorado demonstrates how we are all at the mercy of those who drive under the influence. State Trooper Jaimie Jursevics was struck and killed by a drunk driver while helping investigate a previous accident on November 15th. The sequence of events is particularly sad because Officer Jursevics was trying to protect others on the road that night. While securing the scene, she:
- Monitored passing vehicles to maintain a safe flow of traffic
- Noted a car moving erratically
- Attempted to flag the car down with her flashlight
- Was struck and killed when the driver lost control of the vehicle attempting to pull over to the side of the road
The driver, a retired Army colonel, did not remain at the scene, instead fleeing and hoping no one would ever know that he was driving drunk. Police were ultimately able to track him down and determine he had been under the influence at the time of the accident. In situations like these, the police often act under the assumption the driver was under the influence, because the vast majority of these incidents are associated with drunk or distracted driving. There was nothing Officer Jursevics should have done differently to put herself less at risk. She was simply doing her job, trying to assist her community. Dedication to the job should never cost a police officer her life.
