Five People injured in Five Vehicle Crash in Long Island

News 12 Long Island reported on November 5, 2019, that at least five people were injured in a five-vehicle accident in Commack that shut down the Long Island Expressway for most of the day. Police said that the driver of a 2012 Toyota Highlander westbound on the Long Island Expressway rear-ended a 2004 Honda CRV west of exit 53, causing a chain-reaction crash involving three other vehicles which Patch reported included a 2008 Chrysler Pacifica, a 2016 Mercedes 350 and a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The CRV driver had to be airlifted via Suffolk County Police Helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. The other four drivers were all taken to other hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

The accident occurred at about 7 a.m. and the westbound lanes did not reopen until about 2:30 p.m. The vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is ongoing.

Newsday reported that the Long Island Expressway was initially closed between Exits 53 and 51 and traffic was diverted onto the service road through the area. Traffic was allowed back onto the highway at Exit 52 around 9:30 a.m. before Crime Scene detectives were on the scene to conduct an investigation about an hour later.

This was actually the second five-vehicle wreck in Commack in the past four months, as the Suffolk Daily Voice reported on July 19, 2019, that another five-vehicle crash at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Larkfield Road and the Jericho Turnpike in Commack sent two people to the hospital on Long Island. Multiple-vehicle accidents are often far more confusing than the traditional collision that is limited to two vehicles.

The most recent Commack accident appears to have started with one driver rear-ending another vehicle, but it is not clear from the reporting how the other three vehicles became involved and whether additional negligence could have been a factor in those collisions.
