NEW YORK, NY – Governor Andrew Cuomo reported that over 900 new COVID-19 cases were reported in a single day in New York, demonstrating the continued risk the virus poses.

According to ABC 7 NY, Governor Cuomo stated that 918 of the 66,392 COVID-19 tests performed on Thursday came back positive. This is the highest number of new cases of the virus in New York since June 12. Although the positive tests represent only 1.38% of the total number of tests performed across the state, Governor Cuomo believes this is an important reminder for New Yorkers about the threat of COVID-19.

For the past several weeks, new coronavirus cases in New York have comprised only 1-2% of the tests performed throughout the state each day. This low rate of new infections encouraged New York to move forward with reopening and led state officials to believe they were successfully containing the virus.

However, Governor Cuomo believes New York is at a critical turning point and the number of infections could rise or decline based on residents’ actions. He stressed how important it is for everyone in New York to follow precautions, such as wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. He also urged local governments to continue enforcing COVID-19 guidelines throughout the state.
