Growing Universities Could Yield More Workplace Injury

December 01, 2015 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

Everything having to do with college is getting bigger.  Tuition is getting bigger.  Student loans are getting bigger.  And all that money coming in means the universities themselves are getting bigger, buying up land and expanding outwards.  And when they can’t expand outwards, they expand up.

These large-scale projects can be wonderful for their communities and local economies, but there are always risks when undertaking such major projects, particularly for the construction workers who are handling the building.  As expected, as universities have expanded up, more and more workers have been seriously injured or killed.

In just the last six months, multiple serious incidents have occurred, including:

  • A worker was killed at UNLV on September 23rd, 2015
  • A worker was injured on September 1st, 2015, at Bryant University, by the collapse of a structural steel column
  • A crane operator was killed during construction at Penn State on June 15th
  • Two construction workers were killed in Ames, Iowa while working on university expansion on June 1st

Universities are usually at least partially publicly funded, and they owe it to the public to make sure they not only meet safety specifications, but exceed them.  Worker safety is the most important consideration when erecting a building, even more important that cost.  Universities must do everything in their power to set a new standard when it comes to workplace safety for construction workers.

As it is, there are too many unsafe construction sites, and too many construction workers are injured each year in preventable accidents.  So far little has been done to make these sites safer.  If the public institutions, such as universities, were to pave the way, others might follow.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a workplace accident, you already know too well how dangerous work sites can be.  You also likely know how difficult it can be to get the compensation you are entitled to.  Don’t hesitate to contact an experienced attorney who can help you pursue the negligent party and hold them responsible for their negligence.
