Campaign Season versus Car Accidents: Related?
February 11, 2016 | Finz & Finz, P.C.
The more miles you drive, the more likely you are to be in a car accident. That’s just common sense. There’s a reason that people who have to drive long distances for their jobs are much more likely to be injured and killed on the roads than people who do not. Each extra mile you drive is an extra chance for something terrible to happen.
Certain occupations require driving long miles, some on the highway and some not. Though driving around town might be at lower speeds, even a low speed crash can result in serious injury or death.
Knowing the danger profile of your job is important, and that includes knowing how much driving is required. Some jobs that rack up thousands and thousands of miles a year include:
- Truck drivers, particularly long-haul drivers
- Bus drivers in urban areas
- Cab drivers or other livery service drivers
There are other jobs that build up the miles over the course of the months, but one job that people wouldn’t have associated with this danger recently attracted attention. Three staffers for Ben Carson’s presidential campaign were killed in a van accident in Iowa on January 19th, 2016.
Staffers accrue hundreds of miles over the course of the campaign season, traveling from town to town to attend rallies, canvas, and manage get out the vote campaigns. In this case, the driver lost control of the vehicle upon hitting a patch of ice. It is always important for drivers to take into account weather conditions when they are driving, as ice is particularly dangerous to cars.
Car accidents are a scourge on America. Though some are truly accidents, as might have been the case with Dr. Carson’s staffers, more are the result of poor driving or poor choices. Too many people drive drunk or distracted, putting the safety of others at risk. If you or someone you love has been injured in a car accident, please advise them to retain a qualified attorney who can help them get the help they need.
