Drug Use Common Among Truck Drivers

May 26, 2018 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

An accident outside Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 22nd, 2018 illustrates the dangers of drug use by drivers of semi trucks.  The incident occurred when a semi went the wrong way down a local street, barreling through red lights and only coming to a stop after striking another vehicle.  The driver then fled the scene, only to be discovered hours later, naked but nearby.  Investigating police believe Mr. Kennon was under the influence of PCP.

Use of drugs by truck drivers is extremely common.  A global survey of truckers indicated that approximately half of all drivers will operate their rig under the effects of alcohol, and 30 percent admit to using amphetamines.  Other drugs, though less common, are still prevalent in this population.

The reasons for using drugs and alcohol differ from driver to driver and substance to substance, but include:

  • The use of amphetamines and other stimulants to help the driver stay awake on long trips
  • The use of alcohol due to depression and loneliness
  • The use of other mind altering substances, including PCP and mushrooms, due to boredom

Drugs and alcohol affect the ability of truck drivers to pilot their vehicles safety, resulting in an increased risk of accidents.  The drug use of the driver in Tulsa was made clear by the erratic behavior after the incident, including stripping naked, but the impairment of the driver is not usually so obvious.

If you or someone you love has been injured or killed in an accident with a semi or another large truck, determining whether or not the driver was impaired in any way is important.  Please, considering consulting with a qualified lawyer about your case.  An experienced attorney can guide you through the process of asking the important questions that will get you the answers you need.
