Household Tools and Product Defects

March 17, 2014 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

We know how tempting it is to take it upon ourselves to complete household projects, repairs and renovations. Those televisions shows make it look so easy.  With just a few simple tools and a few minutes to spare, we should have a new room or cabinet installation done in no time, right?  Not so fast.  Let’s not forget the people on the television shows are experts no matter how simple they make the renovation appear. After all, they have had years of practice making it all look seamless.  They time-test their tools and make sure all is in working order before they demonstrate anything on television. The average consumer is not so lucky. We use the tools we have had for many years—often without regular repair or maintenance. We don’t check recall lists to see if our tools or appliances have been recalled. We’re sure nothing would happen to us.

Many injuries, accidents and fatalities occur annually result from product defects including common household tools and applicances we keep in our homes.  Here are some precautions you can take to keep yourself safe while you are doing in-home and outside repairs:

  • Check all outlets and plugs.
  • Make sure there are no water sources in these areas where electricity will be flowing.
  • Keep kids and pets away from the work area.
  • Check your ladders and step stools.  Are they adequate to reach the areas that you need to reach?  Or do you have to stretch too far, posing a hazard for yourself?
  • Have you tested the tools before you actually started working with them?  It’s a good idea to test them if you haven’t used them in a while.  What if that nail gun is stuck or the saw is rusted.?  Any malfunction could pose an injury.
  • Do you have enough time to complete the project.?  It’s one thing to put a few nails in the wall, but it’s another thing to try to add a new room in a half a day.  Hurrying through the project will result in missteps from start to finish.  Be smart and plan the project, as you would any other work that you have to do.

Do-it-yourself projects and repairs are possible when you take the proper precautions for doing so.  If you have been injured as a result of product defect while you were working on your home or the home of someone else, you want to make sure your personal injury case has all the right components.  Enlisting a New York law firm who can assist is your first step.
