Coronary Artery Disease: The Heart of the Matter

March 30, 2015 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

A study published on the website of the National Center for Biotechnology Information stands to upend everything we thought we knew about Coronary Artery Disease (CAD).  If the study is verified by other doctors and researchers, most of the causes commonly associated with CAD are not actually responsible for the devastating disease.

Vladimir Subbotin, the author, proposes that Coronary Artery Disease is not actually caused by the build-up of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Instead, he notes:

  • Occlusion of blood vessels begins from the inside of the cell walls, not the outside, indicating that cholesterol is not the cause of the occlusion
  • Poor oxygenation of blood has the highest comorbidity with CAD, explaining why smoking has such a tremendous negative impact on the disease
  • The number one risk factor for CAD is age
  • There are appears to be a large genetic factor involved in the development of Coronary Artery Disease

Further research is definitely needed, but if this proves true it will go a long way towards removing the social stigma of Coronary Artery Disease.  Some doctors have a tendency to blame the patient, believing that a poor diet or lack of exercise is the culprit behind their developing Coronary Artery Disease.  Demonstrating that age and genetics are the primary motivators could drastically improve doctor-patient relationships.

Unfortunately, it can take a mountain of evidence to change a doctor’s thoughts if he’s already made up his mind.  Too many doctors remain critical of patients for lifestyle choices that are not responsible for their illnesses.  And many more doctors miss the fact the patient has the disease until it is already too late to make a positive difference with traditional treatments.

If your doctor missed your diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease, please contact a qualified attorney.  All too often doctors miss these diagnoses and are never held to account for the lives they damage.  Only an experienced lawyer can help you hold the doctor to account, and help prevent other patients from suffering because of a missed diagnosis.
