Anoxic Brain Injuries Can Result in Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that results in seizures, sudden electrical signals in the brain that result in loss of function and in many cases loss of conscious control of the body. Seizures can happen at any time and in any place, though certain stimuli, such as flashing lights, are more likely to trigger these episodes.
Seizures are divided into 6 different types, including:
- Grand mal
- Petit mal (or absence seizures)
These types of seizures vary in severity from each other, and each type can vary greatly from episode to episode. One Grand mal seizure may last for dozens of minutes, while others may be over in five. Recognizing when a seizure is life-threatening, or poses significant risk of brain damage, can be difficult even for people who have experienced hundreds of seizures in their lifetimes.
The causes of epilepsy can be as different as the type of seizures. In some cases, doctors are unable to ascertain the reason a patient develops epilepsy. In other cases, there is comorbidity with other developmental disabilities and disorders. Epilepsy can also be caused by Traumatic Brain Injury, or by brain damage caused by anoxia caused by birth trauma.
Anoxic brain injuries caused by birth trauma are often associated with medical malpractice. Epilepsy is not the only outcome of brain damage caused by anoxic brain injury. Anoxia can also result in developmental delay, headaches, and long-term memory issues.
