Voluntary Recall Issued for Samsung Washing Machines Due to Injury Risk

As if Samsung wasn’t having a bad enough year, the company is cooperating with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on a voluntary recall in the U.S. of 34 models of their top-loading washing machines, an estimated 2.8 million in total. The recall comes less than a month after the South Korean company was forced to pull their Galaxy Note 7 phones off the market due to the possibility of the battery catching fire.

The reason behind the recall is a problem with the top of the machine suddenly becoming detached from the base frame, primarily during the spin cycle. There have been over 730 reports of the machines vibrating excessively, with accidents resulting in a broken jaw and various injuries from falls after being knocked over by the detached top. The chairman of the CPSC says the tops on the machines are not secured enough due to a design failure. He stresses that this is causing, “a very serious hazard.” The CPSC recommends using delicate or waterproof cycles to lower the chance of an accident, especially with very bulky loads of laundry.

The machines, which range in price from $450-$1,500, were sold between March 2011 and November 2016, in major retailers such as Sears, The Home Depot, Best Buy, and Lowe’s. Front-loading washing machines have not been affected. Consumers looking for information on the recalled models can visit Samsung’s website or call 866-264-5636. The company has a number of options for anyone who owns one of the recalled machines. Service teams will be available to come to your home and repair the machine by reinforcing the top. Those who do not want to keep the affected machines are eligible to receive a rebate in order to purchase a new washing machine from any manufacture. Customers who purchased one of the recalled machines in the last 30 days will receive a full refund.
