Using Virtual Reality to Stop Drunk Driving Accidents

Alcohol plays a big part of the holidays. Parties and gatherings with family, friends, and co-workers include wine, beer, and other spirits to go with the celebration. Unfortunately, that means there is a greater risk of intoxicated drivers getting behind the wheel and causing a serious accident. And while the dangers of drunk driving have been conveyed to the public for years, one company is taking a different approach: have a personal experience being involved in a fatal alcohol-related crash through a virtual reality immersion experience.

British company Diaego, which owns popular brands such as Johnnie Walker, Guinness, and Baileys, has partnered with a virtual reality tech company and a New York advertising agency to create a PSA for drunk driving like nothing ever done before. The four-minute-plus video called “Decisions” takes the viewer on a journey in three different vehicles headed on the same road: three friends on their way to a party, a woman on her way home from an evening out with co-workers, and a married couple out for the first time since their child was born. During the experience, viewers will have an in-depth view of exactly what each driver is seeing and feeling. The full effect comes when the virtual reality video is viewed in a special chair that allows the person to feel the cars moving erratically, drifting off the road and shaking during a crash.

The video can be seen by anyone here. Those who are able to view it with a virtual reality headset or goggles can do so on Facebook 360, YouTube 360 and a virtual reality app through The New York Times. The complete immersive experience with the motion chair will be available at events sponsored by Diaego including music festivals. The company is also working with various schools and police departments across the country so as many people as possible can feel the physical and emotional impact of a drunk driving accident.

The PSA ends with the message that “Every alcohol-related traffic death is extremely preventable. Be the one to make the right decision.” There are still too many drivers who choose to not make the right decision, especially this time of year. The National Transportation Safety Board reports that during the holidays, drunk driving accidents are responsible for an average of 728 injured or killed individuals every day.
