Queens moped critically injured after being struck by hit-and-run driver

ASTORIA, QUEENS – New York City police are investigating a collision that injured a moped rider in Queens on Saturday night, according to a report by WNBC.

The incident happened in the area of 29th Street and Broadway in the Astoria section of the borough.  Police said a 26-year-old man was riding a moped east on Broadway at about 6 p.m. when he was struck at the intersection by a Volkswagen Atlas.

The impact sent the rider into the doorway of a nearby grocery store.  The victim, a delivery worker, suffered severe trauma and was transported to Elmhurst Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle involved left the scene following the crash.  The vehicle was later found abandoned, but the driver fled on foot and was being sought by police.  The car reportedly had New Jersey license plates.
