EAST MEADOW, LONG ISLAND – 13 students were hospitalized after a pickup truck collided with a school bus on Long Island last week, WNBC reported.

The accident happened May 1 at about 4 p.m. around the time students were being dismissed at Meadowbrook Elementary School in East Meadow.

Nassau County Police said the driver of the school bus was making a left turn from the school parking lot onto Old Westbury Road when the vehicle was struck by a pickup truck.

41 students were on board the bus at the time of the collision.  Of the 13 who were taken to Nassau University Medical Center, all were reported to have sustained minor injuries.  They were treated and released on Monday evening.  The bus driver and pickup driver were also hospitalized.

18 other children were evaluated at the scene and sent home.

An investigation is continuing into the cause of the accident.  Police are examining whether speed or distracted driving were contributing factors.
