SUFFOLK COUNTY, LONG ISLAND – A man has been sentenced to prison for a crash on Long Island that killed a passenger in his car, the Nassau Daily Voice reports.
The accident happened September 18, 2022 on the Southern State Parkway near the Robert Moses Causeway. According to prosecutors, Jhonny Chavarria-Argueta of Bay Shore was driving a rented Hyundai Santa Fe eastbound at an extremely high rate of speed at about 4:20 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a median guardrail.
The Hyundai then rolled multiple times and came to rest against an overpass. A front-seat passenger, 19-year-old Jessica Gonzalez of Commack, was thrown from the vehicle and killed. Chavarria-Argueta exited the car and fled the scene on foot after the wreck, prosecutors said.
An investigation determined that he had been driving under the influence and going at 120 miles per hour just prior to the crash.
Chavarria-Argueta was sentenced last week to four to 12 years in prison. He pleaded guilty in April to multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident without reporting.
“The defendant’s complete and utter carelessness cost Jessica Gonzalez her life,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney. “There may have been a chance for the victim’s survival if the defendant didn’t think about himself following the crash and, instead, rendered aid to Jessica.”
