Man indicted for Manhattan car accident that injured about 20 people

MANHATTAN, NY – A man has been indicted in connection with a car accident in Manhattan in January that left about 20 people injured.

In a news release, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., announced the charges against 26-year-old Jonathan Valentin of Maywood, New Jersey.

The crash happened Jan. 2 on Broadway just north of 204th Street in the Inwood section.  Court documents and statements said that Valentin accelerated out of a gas station while driving an Audi and crashed into an Uber car, causing the Uber to careen into a crowded restaurant, the Inwood Bar and Grill.

Among those injured was an 11-year-old girl who had to have right leg amputated.  A one-year-child was also injured.  Valentin allegedly fled the scene to New Jersey after the incident.

“An 11-year-old has suffered life changing injuries as a result of this defendant’s alleged reckless behavior,” said Bragg. “After crashing into another car and causing that car to plow through the front of a crowded restaurant, injuring about 20 people, he immediately fled the scene in an attempt to evade responsibility.”

Valentin is charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, causing serious physical injury, ten counts of third-degree assault, and other violations of vehicle and traffic law. Prosecutors said Valentin’s license had been revoked in New York.
