PATCHOGUE, LONG ISLAND – The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced charges against a man who allegedly left the scene of a crash last year.

57-year-old Brian Sloan, a civilian mechanic with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, was indicted in connection with the incident that happened in Patchogue on Dec. 23, 2022.

According to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, Sloan was driving a Ford F-250 pickup truck owned by the sheriff’s office when he went through a red light and collided with a sedan making a left turn.  The sedan driver was injured and taken to Long Island Community Hospital.

Sloan left the scene without stopping or exchanging any information, Tierney said.  An off-duty New York City police officer witnessed the accident, followed the pickup truck and recorded the license plate number.

Prosecutors said Sloan later lied to the sheriff’s office, signing documents that claimed he was involved in a one-car accident and had crashed into a guardrail after hitting an icy patch.

He now faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an incident with personal injury without reporting, two counts of falsifying business records, and two misdemeanor counts of official misconduct.

“This defendant is alleged to have fled the scene of a motor vehicle crash that injured another driver, and then compounded that conduct by allegedly filing false documents with the Sheriff’s Office in an effort to conceal what he had done,” said Tierney. “My Office is committed to the principle that no one is above the law, including government employees.

Sloan surrendered to authorities and was released on his own recognizance following a court appearance.  He is due back in court April 26.
