MANHATTAN, NY – Police said a car accident in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday evening left at least ten people injured, WNBC reports.

The incident occurred at the intersection of East 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. Police said officers were trying to pull over the driver of a reportedly stolen vehicle for a traffic stop when he sped off and attempted to flee.

The driver hit a cyclist and a taxi before going onto a sidewalk and hitting a group of pedestrians who were walking in the area near the Hyatt Hotel.  The driver then made a U-turn and struck another vehicle head-on.

The injured victims, who included at least two children, were transported to Bellevue Hospital.  None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Authorities said civilians helped detain the 20-year-old driver until police arrived and took him into custody.  A search is continuing for a second person who was in the stolen car.

The NYPD, FDNY and paramedics all responded to the scene of the crash, and the intersection was closed off to traffic.  Drivers were advised to avoid the area.
