BAY RIDGE, BROOKLYN – A car accident in Brooklyn early Sunday morning left three people dead, WPIX reports.

It happened near the Belt Parkway in the Bay Ridge section of the borough.  Police and firefighters responded to the scene in the area of Shore Road and Fourth Avenue after the crash occurred at about 7:45 a.m.

Investigators said the driver of a Toyota Corolla was going east on Shore Road at an apparent high rate of speed when the driver lost control and struck a tree, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Three passengers were trapped inside the burning car and were pronounced dead at the scene.  The victims were two 37-year-old women and a man.  The identities of the victims were not immediately released.  Another man, age 38, was taken to NYU Langone Hospital in stable condition.

The entrance to the Belt Parkway was shut down for hours while the wreckage was being cleared and investigators worked at the scene.
