FREEPORT, LONG ISLAND – A car accident on Long Island involving an alleged drunk driver sent two people to the hospital, WINS reported.

The incident happened early Sunday morning on Sunrise Highway in Nassau County.  Police said a man driving a black Toyota Camry was heading west on the highway near McKinley Place in Freeport at about 4 a.m.

The driver veered off the roadway and collided with a pole, causing the vehicle to split into two pieces.  The impact sent one part of the car into a nearby building while the other half remained on the roadway.

The 28-year-old driver and his 28-year-old male passenger suffered injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.  Both were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver was subsequently arrested on multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, vehicular assault and reckless endangerment.  He was to be arraigned when it was deemed medically practical.
