ORANGE COUNTY, NY – A bus carrying students from a Long Island high school crashed in Orange County on Thursday afternoon, leaving two people dead and dozens others injured.

According to WNBC, the incident happened on Interstate 84 near Wawayanda shortly after 1 p.m.  The bus was reported to have tumbled down a 50-foot ravine off the side of the interstate.

The vehicle was transporting students from the Farmingdale High School band in Nassau County to band camp in Greeley, Pennsylvania.

The two people killed in the accident were identified as 77-year-old Beatrice Ferrari and 43-year-old Gina Pellettiere, a music teacher at the high school.  At least 40 people were injured in the wreck, five of whom were young people who were listed in critical condition.  The victims were taken to four area hospitals.

At a news conference, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said it was likely that a faulty front tire contributed to the crash.

The westbound lanes of I-84 were shut down for several hours for the accident response and investigation.

Farmington High School canceled all after-school activities on Thursday.
