EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN – 14 people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision involving an MTA bus in Brooklyn Sunday night, WABC reports.

The incident happened at the intersection of Essex Street and New Lots Avenue at about 8 p.m.  According to investigators, it began when the driver of a Chevy Impala crashed into the back of a Toyota Sienna, causing the Impala to hit a Ford Escape.  The Impala was then struck by an MTA bus going east on the B15 route.

A 44-year-old woman riding in the back of the Impala was critically injured and transported to Brookdale University Hospital.  Nine men and four women were also taken to area hospitals with undisclosed injuries.

The driver of the Impala, 23-year-old Chandiana Jean, was arrested on charges of aggravated unlicensed operator and possession of forged instrument.

The NYPD is continuing its investigation into the cause of the accident and is trying to determine whether speed was a contributing factor.
