1 driver dead, 1 injured following wrong-way accident in East Islip

EAST ISLIP, LONG ISLAND – One driver was killed and another injured when their vehicles collided on a Long Island highway Monday night, according to a report by Newsday.

Emergency crews responded to the scene of the wrong-way wreck on the Southern/Heckscher State Parkway in East Islip shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Investigators determined that 73-year-old Roy Nelson was driving a 2010 Hyundai Sonata northbound in the southbound lanes between exits 44 and 45.  The Sonata collided head-on with a 2020 Tesla.

Nelson, a Holbrook resident, was pronounced dead after being transported to South Shore University Hospital.  Police believe he may have had some type of medical emergency prior to the collision.

The driver of the Tesla driver was taken to the same hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

New York State Police are continuing to investigate the accident, and asked that any witnesses or anyone with further information contact them.
