1 dead, 4 injured after vehicle crashes into pedestrians in Manhattan

MANHATTAN, NY – One person was killed and four others were injured when a motorist drove into a group of people in Manhattan Sunday night, reports WABC.

The incident happened in the area of 3rd Avenue and 21st Street in the Gramercy Park neighborhood.  Police said the driver of a Hyundai Sonata was headed north shortly before 8 p.m. when he veered off the road and crashed into several pedestrians.  The Hyundai continued on and hit the back of a parked, unoccupied Chevy van.

One of the pedestrians, a 23-year-old man, was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Another victim, a 26-year-old woman, was listed in critical condition while a 21-year-old man was in stable condition.  An 18-year-old man riding an e-bike was also struck and was hospitalized, along with a 25-year-old female passenger in the Hyundai.

The driver, 26-year-old Mahbub Ali of Queens, was arrested following the accident on multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, assault, and driving while intoxicated.

Ali was not injured in the crash and was taken into custody at the scene.
