INWOOD, MANHATTAN – A driver attempting to elude police was involved in a deadly car accident in Manhattan on Monday night, WCBS reports.

The incident began when the driver of a rented Lamborghini went through a red light shortly after 10 p.m.  The NYPD said police officers pulled over the driver and got out of their car but the driver then sped away.

Following a police pursuit that lasted several blocks, the Lamborghini struck a Hyundai Elantra making a left turn at 10th Avenue and 213th Street in Inwood.  The driver of the Lamborghini lost control and the vehicle slammed into the pillar of a subway track, where it burst into flames.

A passenger in the Lamborghini, a 21-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Lamborghini, a 22-year-old man, was pulled from the wreck and taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition.  Charges against the man are pending.

The Hyundai driver, a 37-year-old man, was hospitalized in stable condition.
