STATEN ISLAND, NY – An accident on Staten Island Friday morning claimed the life of a bicyclist, reports the Staten Island Advance.
Police and emergency crews responded to the scene on Wilson Avenue near Armstrong Avenue in the Great Kills section of the borough at 10:17 a.m.
An investigation by the New York Police Department determined that a man riding a bicycle south on Wilson Avenue was struck by a sport utility vehicle heading the same direction and became pinned under the SUV. The woman driving the vehicle then went on to sideswipe a car and knock over a street sign.
Neighbors rushed to the scene but were unable to help the bicyclist. The victim, a man believed to be in his 40s, was removed by firefighters and pronounced dead after being taken to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze. His identity was not released.
The driver stayed at the scene of the crash and no charges were immediately filed.
