RIVERHEAD, LONG ISLAND – Two drivers were injured when their vehicles collided head-on on Long Island last week, Riverhead Local reports.

Riverhead police and first responders were called to the scene Tuesday afternoon on Route 58 near the Long Island Expressway in Calverton at about 2:35 p.m.

Police said the driver of a 2008 Honda Accord was headed west when he crossed over the turning lane into oncoming traffic and crashed into a 2010 Toyota Highlander that was going east.  The impact caused the Honda to overturn and end up on its roof in front of a gas station.

The driver of the Honda, 57-year-old Stuart Clark, was seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center.  The driver of the Toyota, 38-year-old Ruth Iglesias, was transported to the same hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Route 58 was closed to traffic in both directions for nearly four hours while the wreck was being cleared.

Riverhead Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident with assistance from New York State police.
