Car hits, kills 14-year-old boy riding bicycle in Suffolk County

SETAUKET, LONG ISLAND – Police on Long Island were at the scene of an accident that left a teenager dead last week, according to a report by LongIsland.com.

The incident took place in the vicinity of Route 347 and Wireless Road in Setauket, Suffolk County.  Police said a 14-year-old boy on a bicycle was riding across Route 347 Thursday evening at about 6:30 p.m.

The bicycle rider was struck by a 2015 Dodge Charger going west on the roadway.  The teen was pronounced dead after being taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.  The victim was a resident of Setauket.

The driver of the Dodge, 36-year-old David Zerella of Port Jefferson, and a female passenger were not injured in the incident.  The car was impounded for a safety check as part of the investigation.

Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are looking into the cause of the fatal crash, and asked anyone who might have further information to contact them.
