Man riding scooter struck and killed by car in Hempstead

HEMPSTEAD, LONG ISLAND – Authorities on Long Island said a man operating a motorized scooter was killed in a collision that took place over the weekend, according to a report by Long Island.com.

The accident occurred Saturday night on Front Street near Ingraham Boulevard in Hempstead at about 7:13 p.m.  Detectives with the Nassau County Police Homicide Squad said the driver of a 2011 black Chevrolet Camaro was going west on Front Street and was making a left turn onto Ingraham Boulevard.

The Camaro struck a 2013 black Taizhou motor scooter that was going east on Front Street.  The operator of the scooter, a 44-year-old man, suffered severe trauma and was pronounced dead after being rushed to an area hospital.  The identity of the victim has not yet been made public.

The driver of the Camaro, a 78-year-old man, was reported to have stayed at the scene.  Nassau County Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.
