WHITESTONE, QUEENS – A collision in Whitestone, Queens early New Year’s Day left five people dead and another hospitalized, according to the New York Post.
Police responded to a 911 call about the incident that occurred in the Bronx-bound lanes of the Cross Island Parkway near the southbound ramp entrance to the Whitestone Bridge at about 5:50 a.m.
An investigation found that the driver of a Mazda sedan was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when it struck a curb and flipped over near Exit 36S on the parkway. The Mazda was then struck by a northbound Honda SUV.
Authorities said four adults who were in the Mazda were ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. The body of a fifth occupant of the Mazda was found a short time later. No further information was released on the identities of the victims.
The driver of the Honda was listed in stable condition after being transported to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital.
The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is looking into the cause of the wreck.
