2 men indicted in fatal hit-and-run crash on Henry Hudson Parkway

NEW YORK, NY – Two men have been indicted for their alleged roles in a fatal crash earlier this year, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. announced.

24-year-old Marcos Vega-Pagan and 29-year-old Cary Brown were both charged with manslaughter, assault, leaving the scene of an accident without reporting – causing death, and criminally negligent homicide.

The incident happened Aug. 3 on the Henry Hudson Parkway near 145th Street at about 10:50 p.m. According to prosecutors, Brown and Vega-Pagan were racing each other in their cars while headed southbound.  Both were driving at about 80 to 90 miles per hour when Vega-Pagan allegedly crashed his BMW into a motorcycle driven by 42-year-old Joel Quintana, who was on his way to work. Quintana was thrown onto the roadway where he was run over by Brown, the district attorney said.  Quintana, a father of six, was killed.

Both Brown and Vega-Pagan allegedly drove away from the scene.  The next day, Vega-Pagan allegedly contacted State Farm falsely claiming that the damage to his vehicle occurred when his car was struck while parked.  Vega-Pagan was also charged with insurance fraud and falsifying business records.

“When our highways and streets turn into playgrounds for cars, it leads to tragedy,” said Bragg. “These defendants displayed extreme recklessness and negligence when they allegedly raced down the Henry Hudson Parkway. Now, Mr. Quintana’s six children and all of his loved ones are mourning his painful loss.”
