Woman riding Citi Bike dies following collision with box truck in Brooklyn

GOWANUS, BROOKLYN – Police said a collision in Brooklyn last week claimed the life of a bicycle rider, the Daily News reports.

The victim was a 37-year-old woman who was riding a Citi Bike e-bike in the Gowanus section of the borough on Tuesday morning.

Investigators said she was going east on Ninth Street near Second Avenue at about 7:20 a.m. in the same direction as a box truck.  The rider and the box truck driver both stopped for a red light at Second Avenue.  When they proceeded as the light turned green, the bicycle’s handlebars came in contact with the box truck.  The woman was dragged to the ground and was hit by the truck.  The victim, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 39-year-old man driving the box truck remained at the scene and no arrests were made.

The advocacy group Transportation Alternatives told the New York Post that the design of Ninth Street was dangerous for bike riders because vehicles are forced to merge into the bike lane, adding that seven bike riders have been injured in crashes on Ninth Street between Smith and Third Avenues over the past two years.
