Students affectionately called her “Miss Carol.” For almost three decades she was a crossing guard at the same intersection in Hempstead, Long Island, protecting children going to and from school in a busy traffic area. Last week, she made the ultimate sacrifice by moving a child out of the way of an 18-wheeler, which in turn fatally struck the 66-year-old woman.
The mother of three and grandmother of seven had served as a crossing guard for 35 years and was stationed at the corner she watched for the last 28 years in the Village of Hempstead. Around 7:30 Friday morning, an 18-wheeler was turning the corner as “Miss Carol” was escorting a group of children across the street. One child did not see the Mack truck, so the veteran crossing guard pushed the little one out of harm’s way while yelling and waving her stop sign at the big rig. The driver was unable to stop and struck the woman, pinning her underneath the truck. None of the children attempting to cross the street or any other pedestrians were injured.
Members of the community were shocked and saddened by the news of the accident. The crossing guard was a fixture in the neighborhood who recently battled lung cancer and couldn’t wait to get back to helping her students. Some witnesses claim the truck driver was attempting to beat a red light while making the turn. He remained at the scene and was questioned by the police. The investigation by the Homicide Squad continues. The truck is also being inspected for any defective parts.
