NEW YORK, NY – On Sunday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stated the government may have to reverse the steps taken to re-open the city, due to copious social distancing violations.
Friday marked the start of the first weekend that New Yorkers were not under lockdown since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Many people returned to their favorite bars to celebrate, but the large crowds concerned Governor Cuomo. Many patrons did not maintain six feet of distance from one another and did not wear masks.
The NY Daily News reports that the state of New York received 25,000 complaints about bars allowing customers to drink on the street and failing to enforce social distancing guidelines over the weekend. Cuomo said that the greatest number of violations occurred in Manhattan and the Hamptons.
During a press conference on June 14, Governor Cuomo stated that if New Yorkers continue to disregard social distancing there will be serious consequences. Bars and restaurants may be at risk of losing their liquor licenses if they do not enforce the social distancing rules still in place across the state.
Cuomo even threatened to reverse the reopening progress and potentially enforce a second lockdown if the violations continue. The governor called upon businesses and local officials to take action to stop the violations and prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Despite these concerns, Saturday saw the lowest number of COVID-19 deaths in the state since the height of the pandemic.
