WPIX-TV reported on September 12, 2019, that a 59-year-old man died after the cherry picker he was working in was struck by a box truck just before 3 a.m. at the intersection of Goldsmith Street and Grand Avenue in Elmhurst. A cherry picker, also known as a basket crane, boom lift, or hydraladder, is a hydraulic crane with a platform commonly used for raising and lowering people.

According to WPIX, the victim was working on a traffic light for Welsbach Electric, a company that fixes traffic lights around the city. When the box truck struck the bucket of the cherry picker, it caused the victim to fall from the basket, and he was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest but ultimately did not survive.

Police told WPIX that the driver was allowed to leave after taking a breathalyzer test and was not arrested at the time. The driver stayed at the scene after the accident, and authorities are still investigating the cause of this fatal crash.
