An intoxicated driver caused the death of the Petara Cordero, girlfriend of Cleveland Browns defensive end Chris Smith, in a roadside accident on Interstate 80 in Ohio on Wednesday, according to a statement released by the team.

Fox 8 News in Cleveland reported that the couple, who had recently celebrated the birth of a daughter, were in Smith’s Lamborghini at around 2:00 a.m., when a tire malfunctioned, causing the car to spin out of control and strike the median. Smith and Cordero did not suffer severe injuries in the crash and were able to get out of the vehicle.

While on the shoulder of the highway, another vehicle struck Cordero and crashed into the passenger side of Smith’s car. Cordero was later pronounced dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Smith was not injured in either crash.

The driver of the other car was also taken to the hospital for treatment and was later released. She admitted to drinking and driving, and authorities are still investigating the crash.
