Woman struck, killed by vehicle while waiting at Queens bus stop

FAR ROCKAWAY, QUEENS – Police said a woman waiting for a bus in Queens was struck and killed by a vehicle, according to amNewYork.

The NYPD responded to 911 calls of a motor vehicle collision June 24 at the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 108th Street in Far Rockaway.

An investigation determined that the driver of a Hyundai SUV fell asleep behind the wheel while heading west on Rockaway Beach Boulevard shortly after 2:15 p.m. The vehicle went onto a curb and struck the woman standing at the bus stop along with three metal benches.

The victim was found on the sidewalk and was pronounced dead after being transported to Brookdale Hospital in Brownsville.  The victim was identified as 19-year-old Ava Conklin of Manhattan.

The driver, a 29-year-old man, stayed at the scene and was later taken into custody.  Charges were reportedly pending against the man, whose name was not released.

The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to investigate the incident.
