Woman fatally struck by alleged drunk driver on Long Island

FREEPORT, LONG ISLAND – Police on Long Island have announced the arrest of an alleged drunk driver after a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle on Wednesday night.

According to a report in the Daily Voice, the incident took place on Babylon Turnpike near Carroll Street in Freeport.  Nassau County police said a man driving a 2018 Nissan Sentra southbound on Babylon Turnpike at about 7 p.m. hit a 24-year-old woman.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  She was identified as Mia Pollidore of Freeport.

The driver, identified as 32-year-old Tyshaun Johashen, remained at the scene of the crash.  Investigators determined that he had been intoxicated behind the wheel at the time, and he was arrested without incident.

Johashen, who police say is homeless, now faces multiple charges in connection with the incident, including vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

He was scheduled for arraignment on Thursday in Hempstead.
