Man charged with manslaughter in Staten Island wreck that killed passenger

STATEN ISLAND, NY – A driver is facing criminal charges in connection with a deadly car wreck that occurred on Staten Island early Saturday morning.

According to the Staten Island Advance, 30-year-old Adem Nikeziq was behind the wheel of a Dodge Challenger headed south on Hylan Boulevard in New Dorp when the accident occurred at about 4:44 a.m.

Police said Nikeziq lost control of the car and crashed into a wooden utility police near Rose Avenue, causing the Dodge to split into several parts.  A passenger, identified as 23-year-old Adriana Sylmetaj of Great Kills, was ejected from the vehicle.  Responding officers found her in the roadway and she was pronounced dead at the scene.  Sylmetaj was pregnant, authorities said.

Nikeziq was taken to Staten Island University Hospital with minor injuries and was listed in stable condition.  He was subsequently arrested on multiple charges, including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, vehicular assault, and driving while ability impaired by alcohol.

The New York Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash.
