LAUREL HOLLOW, LONG ISLAND – A man has been indicted in connection with a deadly car accident that occurred on Long Island over the summer, reports WNBC.

Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced the charges against 33-year-old Sotirios Spanos for the crash on Aug. 12 that left a husband and wife dead.  It happened shortly after midnight on Northern Boulevard near Moores Hill Road in Laurel Hollow.

Prosecutors said Spanos was driving drunk behind the wheel of an Acura MDX while heading east when he crossed over into oncoming traffic and crashed into a 2013 Ferrari head-on.  A woman in the other car, Ismenia Urena, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Her husband, Odalis Urena, died after being taken to an area hospital.

It was determined that Spanos was driving at about 100 miles per hour just seconds before the wreck.  His blood alcohol level was found to be twice the legal limit when measured three hours after the incident.  He was arrested by police in Oyster Bay.

Spanos was indicted on multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

D.A. Donnelly issued a statement that read in part, “The couple was in the prime of their lives, and in an instant, this defendant allegedly took it all away while speeding down Northern Boulevard at 100 miles an hour. Now, the Urena’s children are without their mother and father and a community is in mourning.”

If convicted of the charges, Spanos faces up to 25 years in prison.  He pleaded not guilty at a court hearing on Tuesday and was remanded.
