BRENTWOOD, LONG ISLAND – An alleged drunk driver was arrested following a crash that killed a passenger in his car on Long Island, reports the Nassau Daily Voice.
The accident happened early Friday morning in the area of Fulton Street and Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood, Suffolk County.
Investigators determined that the driver of an Infiniti was trying to make a turn from Suffolk Avenue onto Fulton Street at about 4:30 a.m. when the car was hit by a westbound Kenwood garbage truck.
A front seat passenger in the Infiniti was pronounced dead after being rushed to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore. He was identified as 30-year-old Ronald Landaverde of Brentwood. Another passenger in the car, a 43-year-old man from Brentwood, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
The driver of the garbage truck, 37-year-old Herson Iglesias of Brentwood, was not hurt. The driver of the Infinti, 30-year-old Miguel Portillo of Brentwood, was seriously injured and hospitalized. He was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated.
Suffolk County Police are continuing their investigation into the fatal wreck.
