2 dead in accident involving alleged drunk driver in Nassau County

LAUREL HOLLOW, LONG ISLAND – Two people were killed in a crash involving an alleged drunk driver in Nassau County early Saturday morning, police said.

According to LongIsland.com, two vehicles were involved in the collision on Northern Boulevard near Moores Hill Road in Laurel Hollow at about 12:30 a.m.

Investigators said the driver of a 2023 Acura MDX was heading east on Northern Boulevard when he crossed over the yellow divider in the roadway.  The car then collided with a westbound 2013 Ferrari convertible.  A passenger in the Ferrari, a 37-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver, a 37-year-old man, died after being taken to an area hospital.

The driver of the Acura was identified as 32-year-old Sotirios Spanos of Syosset.  Police determined that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash.  A report in Newsday said that Spanos’s blood alcohol content was found to have been nearly three times over the legal limit.

Spanos was arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, second-degree manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
