VALLEY STREAM, LONG ISLAND – A driver who allegedly left the scene after hitting a young girl on Long Island has been placed under arrest, News12 Long Island reports.
Nassau County Police said the 8-year-old victim was playing in an alleyway behind a home on Dartmouth Street Sunday afternoon when the accident took place shortly after 1:30 p.m. According to investigators, the child was struck by a black SUV heading northbound. The girl sustained a broken leg and was taken to an area hospital to be treated and evaluated.
The driver took off but was apprehended without incident, police said. The suspect has been identified as 52-year-old Heath Underweiser, and was charged with leaving the scene of an incident with an injury.
Underweiser was given a desk appearance ticket, with his next court appearance scheduled for March 2. Neighbors of the victim told News12 that Underweiser is a livery driver in the area.
