Ellen Sundheimer, a senior medical malpractice attorney, plays an integral role in the firm’s medical malpractice department. While attending CUNY School of Law, Ellen specialized in the health care curriculum and was employed as a student intern in the medical malpractice unit at NYC Corporation Counsel. After graduating in 1998, she was admitted to the New York State bar in 1999, and worked for a year at a defense firm specializing in medical malpractice and personal injury. Prior to joining the team at Finz & Finz, Ellen’s further career path was highlighted by her experience in the legal and health care professions where she was an associate attorney and managing attorney at prominent New York law firms.

The bridge to specialize in medical malpractice after law school was a natural path for Ellen. The transition was easily connected by Ellen’s experience in the health care field managing various medical practices including general surgery, rheumatology and orthopedics. Those years gave her the knowledge of medicine and insight into the operations of medical facilities, and brought her to where she is today—litigating some of the most challenging cases for the firm. Later, a situation involving a medical malpractice lawsuit with a personal family member in 2014 kept Ellen engaged and on her path toward helping those who are victims of medical malpractice. “Since one of my family members was herself a victim of medical malpractice, I feel I ‘get it’ when clients come in needing the professional support we can offer.”

Medical malpractice law can offer a variety of challenging cases, which has proven to be the most satisfying part of Ellen’s career, and she credits her enjoyment to the fact that “every case is different.” As with many of the attorneys at Finz & Finz, Ellen’s dedication come in the form of long days that start early and end late. Specializing in medical malpractice litigation means spending many hours in the courtroom, and overseeing all phases of the litigation process including depositions, investigation, settlement and appeals covering such cases related to birth injuries, failure to diagnose, hospital and orthopedic malpractice, nursing errors and nursing home abuse. Ellen says, “We see clients who are injured, and we do our best to help them gain some sense of comfort and financial security by holding those responsible accountable for their actions.”

Although the world of litigation is busy, Ellen spends time out of court raising her teenage grandson, and enjoying her home life in Suffolk County where a rather demanding array of deer, birds and squirrels command her attention for twice daily snacks!  Supporting the animals is natural for Ellen who has rescued cats and dogs, and continues to provide donations of blankets and newspapers to the local animal shelter. A lover of all classical, folk, jazz and 60’s music, Ellen is also an avid Mets fan and enjoys spirited political news and conversation.
