Woman critically injured when Lyft car struck by vehicle in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, NY – A Lyft passenger was critically injured early Monday when her car was struck by a speeding vehicle in Brooklyn, the Daily News reported.

The accident happened in the area of Bedford Avenue and Dekalb Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant at about 12:25 a.m.  Police said a 32-year-old woman was in the back seat of a Honda Accord that was struck by the driver of a Dodge Charger who ran a red light.

The woman was thrown from the vehicle and transported to Bellevue Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.  The Lyft car also slammed into a parked van and went up onto the sidewalk. The passenger was identified as Malka Braver, a mother of six who lives around the corner from where the crash occurred.

The Charger driver was hospitalized in stable condition. He was identified as 22-year-old Ryan Ortiz of Middletown, New York.  The 22-year-old Lyft driver was also in stable condition.

No charges have been filed yet in the case, but police said investigators were continuing to look into the accident.

Lyft released a statement expressing sadness over the incident. The statement read in part, “We’ve reached out to the driver and the rider’s family, and stand ready to assist law enforcement in any investigation.”
