LAKE GROVE, LONG ISLAND, NY – Authorities are trying to track down the hit-and-run driver responsible for the death of a man on Long Island last month, according to Newsday.
54-year-old Ronald DeStefano of Lake Grove was killed when he was struck by a vehicle in Stony Brook on December 20. Suffolk County police said the vehicle was going west on Route 347 when it hit DeStefano as he walked in the area of Hallock Road at about 6:45 a.m. The driver left the scene and the incident was reported to police by a passing motorist who called 911, authorities said. DeStefano was declared dead at the scene.
The victim’s nephew and godson Frank DeStefano said Ronald was walking to work at the time the crash occurred.
As the search for the driver continues, Suffolk County police detectives believe the car involved was a silver vehicle that sustained front and/or passenger side damage.
They are hoping that the public will help them find the culprit, and a reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by Suffolk County Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest.
Frank DeStefano said the family is urging anyone who might have information to come forward and was quoted as saying, “My family is not out for vengeance. We just want answers. Why didn’t you stop? Maybe there is some explanation, but my family doesn’t know.”
