Pedestrian walking on highway in Holbrook killed by hit-and-run driver

HOLBROOK, LONG ISLAND – Authorities are trying to track down the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian accident that occurred Sunday morning in Suffolk County.

According to a report by LONGISLAND.com, authorities responded to the scene after being notified by a passing motorist who called 911 at about 9:45 a.m.  The driver reported having seen a man’s body on the side of Veterans Memorial Highway at Grundy Avenue in the town of Holbrook.

An investigation by Suffolk County Police found that a pedestrian had been walking across the eastbound lane of Veterans Memorial Highway and was struck by a vehicle.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  The man was identified as 59-year-old Alan Lepre of Holbrook.

The driver who struck Lepre fled the scene of the accident and is now being sought.

Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are investigating the crash, and requested that anyone with further information about what happened call Crime Stoppers.

Veterans Memorial Highway was shut down in both directions for the crash investigation.
