LONGWOOD, BRONX – Ten people were hospitalized Thursday following an accident involving a New York Police Department vehicle in the Bronx Thursday, the New York Times reports.

The police car was responding to a call when it collided with another car, went out of control, and hit pedestrians on a sidewalk in the Longwood section of the borough.  The crash happened in the area of Westchester Avenue and Hoe Avenue at about 4 p.m.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey B. Maddrey said two officers in the police vehicle were responding to a report of a stolen car and drove across a double yellow line to avoid a vehicle in front of them, but collided with an Acura.

Police said six people were injured on the sidewalk, including a 5-year-old child.  Two other pedestrians were hit by a traffic pole, and two people in the Acura were injured, including a 2-year-old child.  Of the ten injured victims, two were reported to be in critical condition.

The car thief who was the target of the original pursuit was able to get away after the crash occurred.
