HEMPSTEAD, LONG ISLAND, NY – A high school basketball star died following a car accident on a Long Island roadway Wednesday night, Newsday reports.
The victim was identified as 17-year-old Danyel Saint-Louis, a senior at Freeport High School who was the starting point guard for the school basketball team. New York State Police said Saint-Louis lost control of his vehicle while driving north on the Meadowbrook State Parkway, hit a median and ended up on the right shoulder.
He was standing outside his car when he was struck by a passing vehicle near the exit for the Southern State Parkway at about 7:14 p.m. He died at the scene. Two other people who had gotten out of their own cars to try and help Saint-Louis were struck by another vehicle.
A total of five people were injured, one seriously, and all were taken to Nassau University Medical Center.
The Freeport basketball team organized a ceremony to honor Saint-Louis that was held Thursday in Glacken Park. According to Newsday, the town school superintendent wrote a letter to the community that read in part, “Danyel will be remembered as someone who was well liked with boundless energy and a positive attitude.”
About an hour after the crash that killed Saint-Louis, another fatal accident occurred on the Meadowbrook State Parkway. Police said 17-year-old Jake Lonigro of Merrick lost control of his car, went over a median and crossed into incoming traffic. He struck a vehicle driven by 70-year-old Jagdeo Ramdayal of Elmont, who was killed in the crash.
Police have not yet said whether Wednesday night’s rain contributed to either fatal accident. The investigation into both incidents is continuing.
