YONKERS, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY – A driver who crashed into a barbershop in Yonkers in July pleaded guilty in the case last week, the Journal News reports.
Police said 44-year-old David Poncurak of Yonkers was driving a Hyundai Elantra north on Morningside Avenue July 23 when he turned onto Lake Avenue at about 8:30 a.m. His vehicle hit a curb and a parked car, then struck a woman and her 8-month-old daughter before hitting the barbershop.
Two police officers and bystanders were able to lift the car off the child, and she and her mother were both hospitalized at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.
Poncurak entered his plea Tuesday to several charges, including first-degree vehicular assault, driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of drugs or alcohol, and driving while intoxicated. Prosecutors also said he did not have a license at the time of the crash. He will be sentenced on January 13.
Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah issued a statement that read in part, “David Poncurak’s decision to drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs put a mother and her infant child at severe risk.” She also commended the police officers, bystanders and ambulance crew who came to the aid of the woman and her daughter.
